true story: i bought mirror’s edge, couldn’t play it on the computer i bought it on, bought it again on console, and then found out it makes me instantly motion sick

That’s my biggest fear.  There are some first person games that don’t make instantly motion sick and that was a huge, huge gamble for me to take buying them cold.  Even then I can only play for about 10-30 minute chunks depending, but I wanted to play them so much I bullied myself into it.

My friend has the same problem with motion sickness & first person games.

I don’t know if you’ve tried it, but she used to take half a pill of Dramamine before playing. She still couldn’t play a long time, but it seemed to work.

I don’t think I’ve heard of other people doing that.  I’m pretty reluctant to take medication unless strictly necessary (possibly stemmed from the fact pain killers make me feel like shit) but I suppose if I find a game I’m that determined to play, it would be something to fall back on.

Yeah, I understand that. :) Pain killers & motion sick meds affect everyone differently, so I wouldn’t take them either if they reacted poorly. 

If you tried it, though, I’d recommend starting with a half-dose, as it tends to make you drowsy.

I only mentioned it because I use Dramamine myself for travel motion sickness, so I recognized it when she mentioned taking it to play a game.

Hi! I have this same problem and I found a really weird solution that actually works for me!

So, you know I’ve been playing Mass Effect? But it was making me really nauseated after only playing a little bit, and I also got bad headaches. This is pretty common for me with this sort of game, it’s something to do with the camera…FPS bad, this bad, camera zoomed out a lil more? Okay.

Anyway, I found that if I play laying down with my neck supported, I can play all night! Really laying down, not “half sitting up.” Just barely with my neck onna pillow. If I start to feel sick or headachy I slump down more and feel ok!

Might be worth a try to see if it works for you, fellow motion-sick persons!

Chiming in with my experiences. I get motion sick stupidly fast. Carsick, airsick. seasick, you name it.  Games can cause “simulator sickness” so even people without motion sickness can experience it. Something about your eyes telling your brain it’s moving and your brain realizing it’s not.

For me, what seems to work for FPS games is to play a little bit at a time.   I’ve tried the dramamine thing and it worked to help ease me into it so I could get use to it but even the non-drowsy one made me really tired. Whenever I try a new game it takes me a few days to be able to play for more than an hour. Some games take longer for me to get use to, Dead Island took forever and Skyrim gave me a headache within 15 minutes.

Some games cause less issues for me on consoles. I can play Borderlands no problem on PS3 but get sick on PC if I’m not acclimated. If you know when you’re getting sick it will help you stop before you are miserable. I hope you get to enjoy your game somehow and find something that works for you.
